Neil's work permit is for 3 years, and since we've been here for 2 years now & figure we are going to be here a while, Sobeys is starting the process to help us get permanent residency. And OH MY GOODNESS...what a process it is!!! It generally takes about 13 months to process, and we both have get fingerprinting & have police clearance certificates from all countries we've lived in (for more than 6 months), since the age of 18--so Neil has to get it from the U.S., Russia, & Estonia (from his LDS mission), and we have to have listed all jobs and places of residence from the age of 18 (we've moved around quite a bit, so that should be a challenge--who keeps all those past addresses?). Everyone in our family has to have a special medical exam (by a Citizenship & Immigration approved physician), we have to verify Neil's work experience in Canada & how long we've been here, AND the real kicker is that Neil is REQUIRED to take a Canadian English Language proficiency test, which costs $250! If that is our native language, and speak it just fine, it's ridiculous that we have to pay that much to prove it. Maybe we have to show that we can spell "centre, pyjamas, labour, etc." all the right Canadian way, and add "eh" into our vocabulary! :) Hahahaha! I'm SOOOO glad Neil's company is helping us with this process!!! After we are done with this, we might look at getting dual citizenship for U.S. & Canada (we didn't know we could even do that, but we can). There would be lots of benefits for us & our kids if we did. We will see.... :)
