Deep thoughts by Jonah...

So today when I went into the school to help with Tessa's 7th grade field trip, the office secretary said that Jonah had her laughing the other day. He got hurt at recess, so he was in there with an ice pack & they were talking. She asked him if he is enjoying Canada, now that he's been here a year. He said, "Well yeah, I like it, other than the healthcare." WHAT?!! A 9-year old having a political discussion about the Canadian healthcare?! HAHAHAHAHA! I thought he'd say that he misses Mexican food, or doesn't like having to learn French, or Canadian geography or something. But NO--it's the healthcare! I was laughing so hard! He said that people abuse the system here, because they go to the doctor for every little thing, because it's free, and that his mom wouldn't take him to the doctor for his little injury at recess, or for a little cold, because in the US, we'd only go to the doctor if we were REALLY sick! Kids are so funny! They keep me laughing!!! :)

And that's even more funny, because I actually LIKE the Canadian healthcare! It's great being able to go to the doctor & not pay a fortune, if the kids are sick & I'm not sure if it's strep throat or not, & things like that. In the US we spent a LOT every time we just walked in the door to see a doctor (like $85 just for a 5-minute general visit, and it went a whole lot higher if you needed any X-rays or other care).

(And I'm really glad that the secretary wasn't offended by Jonah's 9-year old opinion. She is actually married to an American, so he thought it was hilarious too.)
