What do you get when you combine 1 chain smoker who just got "mugged & pistol whipped" a month ago, 1 tall skinny guy with only 1 leg and not much muscle tone, and 1 nice guy, working on only 2 hours of sleep, who does his best despite the circumstances?! OUR MOVING CREW TODAY! It was VERY interesting to say the least!!! But after THREE weeks of waiting for our stuff to arrive, and then 10 LONG hours of unloading from our CRAZY moving crew, at least we have all of our stuff, and none of it is damaged. :) Hooray! Lots more unpacking to come...
So, just some of the problems were, two of the guys unloading the truck were temps from an agency & had no clue what they were doing, and the guy in charge (who was also the driver), kept saying that he wasn't quite ready to be back to work yet & had a headache (I don't know how many times he mentioned the fact that he was "mugged & pistol whipped" to us & everyone else that he talked to). I guess that's why he kept stopping every half hour for a smoke, or to check his computer. And the guy with one leg really wasn't physically able to do the job. I thought the poor guy was going to die, going up & down the stairs a million times. And he had some serious issues with the rose bushes by our front door. He told us we shouldn't have planted them (we just moved in, so obviously we didn't!), and that we should really pull them out & replace them or cut all the thorns off, because it kept scratching his legs. And then, when the one guy in charge got a sliver, I thought he'd cut his whole hand off! I heard him hollering from upstairs like he was dying. He said he needed a needle to get the sliver out (but of course we didn't have any handy--they were in a box somewhere). I finally got a pair of tweezers & clippers & he got the sliver out, after about 15 minutes of gritting his teeth & doing some lamaze breething. And the poor 3rd guy, who was very nice and hard working, was just trying to do his best. However, he was told the job would be about 4 hours long, but ended up being EIGHT! He had only had 2 hours of sleep the night before & was exhausted. Neil & I finally ended up helping carry in some boxes & furniture, and helping to put beds & dressers back together, to try to get the process done faster. AND they didn't even move some of our things to the basement, because the guy in charge said the other two weren't professionals & wouldn't be able to help him get the items down there the right way. So...Neil gets to move them from our garage to the basement with someone from our ward this weekend (and they aren't even professionals)!
I can't believe we paid very good money for that kind of service! Of course it's money that's coming for our relocation allowance, but still, we only have a certain amount, it's money that could be used in other places. However, we ARE very grateful to finally have all of our things. I hope we don't have to move again for a very long time!!!!
